Hey! You replied to my post about the Peace Corps a while back. I suppose I was wondering about the best way to get involved with the program and the general process of becoming a volunteer. I'm still a student so I can't apply for a couple of years, but I did want to know what sort of things they look for in a volunteer. Thanks a lot for any help!

Hi there. Well, I would say that in my case as an ESL teacher volunteer, the Peace Corps looks for volunteers that have the ability to learn new skills, a mind that is open and flexible, and a diversity of experiences. In college, I had a wide range of organizations on my resume, and they weren’t all “service” oriented- I held leadership roles in my sorority, dj’d for the radio station, chaired an annual art showcase, as well as more traditional volunteer positions such as volunteering at an inner city after school program.

When I got my nomination for ESL teaching, I was asked to complete 30 hours of volunteer ESL work- in many cases, once you’re nominated for a program, the PC asks for you to complete hours, so don’t worry about tailoring your resume to a specific PC program. Do things you love, and that passion will come through in your application process!
