This is by far one of my favorite things about John Waters’ films starring Divine. These scenes with someone who is so Violently Visibly Queer simply walking down the street and people are so fucking terrified/confused that they just don’t even know what to do. These scenes actually make me want to be out in public, and that is saying a lot for someone with an anxiety disorder and unhealthy isolationist tendencies who has had the shit beaten out of them and physically and verbally harassed so many times just for existing visibly as they perceive themselves. And I still want that fucking dress from Female Trouble.

She dazzled me… with science!: An Interview with Julia Serano
Julia Serano is perhaps best-known as the author of Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity, the book that popularized the word “cisgender.” Her influential text helped shift the conversation about trans inclusion and the marginalization of trans women in particular. In part one of this extended interview, we discuss how her background as a biologist helps her debunk transphobic arguments.
Highlights include:
- how she came to find her name on Stephen Colbert’s wikipedia page,
- why identifying as bisexual is not inherently transphobic,
- how she popularized the word cisgender.
